A place where company stocks and other securities are trades is a stock exchange. Less and less trading is linked to such a physical place nowadays. Speed and low cost of transactions are advantages or modern markets being electronic networks. One of the most important components of a stock market is a stock exchange. Men who managed debts of agricultural communities on behalf of banks, are considered to be the first “brokers” which are mentioned in the history in the 11th century France. They could be called the first brokers, because in some cases they also traded in debts.
In Bruges (“Bruges Bourse”), in the late 13th century Van der Burse started to gather the commodity traders. “Bourses”, in Ghent and Amsterdam were opening since, this idea became very popular and therefore spread around the neighbor countries. In the middle of the 13th Century in Venetia, first time bankers started to trade in the government securities. People in Pisa, Verona, Genoa and Florence also began trading in government securities later in the 14th Century. In 1602 the first shares on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange were issued by the Dutch East India Company. This was the first company to issue stocks and bonds.
